During a rare address to the United Nations General Assembly, North Korea’s Vice Foreign Minister Kim Son Gyong firmly stated that his nation will not relinquish its nuclear weapons. He described them as essential to preserving a balance of power with South Korea amidst what he portrayed as escalating military threats.
Kim criticized the frequent U.S.-led military exercises with South Korea and Japan, claiming they constitute a growing aggression. He argued that demands for North Korean denuclearization amounted to an attempt to subjugate his country and violate its sovereignty.
Notably, his remarks were more measured than usual, avoiding overt insults or naming specific U.S. officials, yet maintaining a firm tone. He noted that North Korea’s nuclear program is enshrined in the country’s constitution and asserted that deterrence is vital to its security.
This appearance marked the first time North Korea has participated in the General Assembly at a high level since 2018.
