Reports circulated online suggesting that Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) had laid off as many as 80,000 employees in India, sparking anxiety among professionals and job seekers. The speculation claimed that many workers were asked to resign, with severance packages ranging from 18 months of salary to none at all.
TCS, however, clarified that these figures are inaccurate and misleading. The company confirmed that the actual impact has been limited to around 2% of its global workforce—approximately 12,000 jobs—due to restructuring.
Industry experts noted that the inflated numbers likely originated from unverified social media posts. TCS emphasized that the changes are driven by evolving client demands and skill mismatches, not wholesale replacement by artificial intelligence. CEO K. Krithivasan reassured employees that automation is not the core reason behind the workforce changes, but rather a need to align skills with market requirements.
The company further stated that it remains committed to employee growth and continues to invest in reskilling initiatives to prepare its workforce for future opportunities.
