Sam Altman Predicts AGI Could Take Over 40% of Tasks by 2030

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, recently shared his vision that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could soon be responsible for completing 30 to 40 percent of the tasks people now perform. While speaking in an interview, he emphasized that it makes more sense to think in terms of tasks being automated rather than entire jobs disappearing overnight.

He suggested that models far more capable than those today may emerge before 2030, noting that if we don’t see organisms or systems that can surpass human ability in multiple domains, he would be surprised. He also remarked that AI, at least initially, might treat humans in a parental or caring role—citing the idea of embedding “maternal instincts” into AI to ensure alignment with human values.

Still, Altman cautioned that AGI brings unknowns. There will likely be consequences we haven’t anticipated, and it’s essential to shape these systems carefully using human values, oversight, and alignment strategies.
