President Donald Trump said the United States is ready to ensure strong security for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, assuring reporters in Washington, D.C., that the federal government will intervene if any host city struggles with crime or public safety issues.

Speaking at the Kennedy Center before the World Cup draw, Trump emphasized that although he prefers local authorities to handle their own policing, federal support would be swift if needed.

“If they have a problem by the time we get there, we will take care of it,” Trump said. “We can solve that problem very easily. We’ve done it in D.C. and everywhere else we’ve gone.”

Tension with Boston Over Security Concerns

Trump’s comments follow weeks of friction with Boston officials, triggered by his criticism of a violent street incident that occurred in the city in October. The president suggested he might relocate Boston’s scheduled World Cup matches if local authorities fail to control crime.

He also attacked Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, calling her “radical left,” though he noted she was more “intelligent” than other critics he has labeled as having “low IQ.”

Trump hinted he could involve FIFA President Gianni Infantino to support any relocation decision, saying:

“If we think Boston or any other city isn’t doing its job, we will move those World Cup games somewhere else.”

Response from Boston and FIFA

Mayor Wu responded that Boston is honored to host World Cup matches and looks forward to welcoming visitors from around the globe.

FIFA issued a clarifying statement to ESPN noting that while FIFA organizes the tournament, national governments have final authority over public safety decisions:

“Safety and security are the top priorities at all FIFA events. Governments decide what is in the best interest for public safety.”

Boston is currently slated to host seven matches in next year’s tournament, including five group-stage fixtures, one Round of 32 match, and a quarterfinal scheduled for July 9.
