In the 2025 Asia Cup being held in the UAE, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson continues to enjoy fervent support, especially from the Malayali community in the Emirates, but his spot in India’s playing XI remains uncertain. The chants “Chettan polia” and “Mone Kalaku” echo in stadiums, and fans flock to get a glimpse or autograph of their favorite cricketer.
Samson recently walked past a group of fans chanting his name after practice, and though his teammates had already boarded the team bus, he paused to wave and interact. The outpouring of affection has made him feel like a local wherever he plays in the UAE.
In India’s match against Oman, Samson scored 56 runs off 41 balls while batting at No. 3, earning him a “Man of the Match” award even as critics noted he struggled against the older ball. Against Pakistan, he came in during a chase of 49 from 46 balls and showed glimpses of form, but ended up struggling with deliveries that cut or reversed. He was eventually dismissed, raising further questions about his fit in the middle order.
With the return of top-order options like Shubman Gill, Samson’s role is being recalibrated. Analysts point out that he was once more comfortable facing the new ball, but now needs to adapt to batting later in the innings. In the squad, he is assessed against Jitesh Sharma and others for the wicketkeeper-batter spot.
Team management has expressed faith in his ability to adjust. Captain Suryakumar Yadav stated that the environment in the team is relaxed yet supportive. Samson himself acknowledged the backing of his teammates and coaches, saying that faith is being shown in him to find consistency in this newer position.
Critics, including former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, have already labeled Samson a “weak link” after his 13-run knock during India’s chase versus Pakistan. Yet, many believe just one solid innings could stabilize his place. Meanwhile, fans remain loyal and vocal—cheering him on regardless of results and hoping a big knock can silence doubts.
