On September 23, 2025, President Donald Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the United Nations General Assembly and declared that he now believes Ukraine can reclaim all its lost territory from Russia — a shift from his earlier stance urging Kyiv to make concessions.

Trump also canceled a scheduled meeting with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, which was intended to address government funding ahead of a potential shutdown. The cancellation added more strain to already tense relations between the White House and Democratic leaders.

In a separate development, a Florida jury convicted Ryan Wesley Routh for attempting to assassinate Trump during a 2024 attack at a golf course. Following the verdict, Routh tried to stab himself with a pen, but was restrained by U.S. marshals.
