Major broadcasters Nexstar Media and Sinclair Broadcasting have refused to resume airing Jimmy Kimmel Live! on their ABC affiliate stations, even after Disney announced the show’s return. Together, the two companies operate more than 70 ABC affiliates—covering over a quarter of ABC stations nationwide—and reach about 23% of U.S. households.
The decision comes after controversy surrounding comments Kimmel made about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Following the backlash, ABC temporarily suspended the show. Federal regulators also warned that local stations airing Kimmel could face fines or license reviews.
Despite Disney’s push to restore the program, Nexstar and Sinclair said they would not broadcast the show until they received guarantees of more respectful public discourse. Instead, they plan to air alternative programming, including local news, in its time slot.
President Trump and some Republicans praised the affiliates’ decision, while critics, including prominent Democratic leaders, described it as censorship and a threat to media freedom. The move has sparked debate about whether broadcasters acted independently or under pressure from regulators, especially since both companies currently have pending business before the FCC.
