Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed his deep affection for Indian sweets, particularly during Diwali celebrations, at the NDTV World Summit 2025 in New Delhi. Sunak revealed that his first stop for Diwali shopping was Khan Market, where he indulged in a variety of traditional sweets. He fondly recalled, “For me, Diwali shopping is mithai first,” emphasizing the importance of sweets in his festive traditions.
During his visit to the Bengali Sweet Market, Sunak enjoyed fresh kulfi and also took home jalebi and barfi to share with his family. He mentioned that he had packed these sweets to bring back home, highlighting his love for these traditional treats.
In addition to his culinary experiences, Sunak discussed the influence of his in-laws on his values and character. He spoke about learning the importance of respect from his father-in-law, Narayana Murthy, and the value of compassion from his mother-in-law, Sudha Murthy, which he sees reflected in his wife, Akshata Murthy.
