TSA Expands Touchless ID Screening to 15 U.S. Airports

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is taking a major step toward modernizing airport security by introducing TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, a faster and more convenient screening process now available at 15 airports nationwide.

Background: From PreCheck to Touchless ID

Since 2013, TSA PreCheck has allowed eligible travelers to move through security more quickly by keeping shoes, belts, and light jackets on while skipping laptop and liquid checks. But as enrollment has grown, PreCheck lines at busy airports have often become nearly as long as standard security lanes.

To address this, TSA has begun rolling out a new Touchless ID system designed to further cut down wait times and reduce the need for physical document checks.

How TSA PreCheck Touchless ID Works

Unlike the current process where travelers hand an ID to an officer for verification, the Touchless ID system uses facial recognition technology:

  • Passengers opting in simply pause at a checkpoint camera.
  • The system compares their live image with a secure database of pre-verified passport or visa photos already on file with the government.
  • Once matched, they continue through security without presenting a physical ID.

According to the TSA, the program is designed to enhance both efficiency and security, while minimizing direct contact between passengers and officers.

Eligibility and Enrollment

To use TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, travelers must:

  • Already be enrolled in TSA PreCheck with a Known Traveler Number (KTN).
  • Opt in through a participating airline’s website or app.

The feature is usually found in the “Travel Documents” or “Profile” section, where passengers add their KTN or passport details. Once enabled, the airline syncs participation with TSA systems at eligible airports.

Airports Offering Touchless ID

As of now, 15 airports across the U.S. have implemented the system, including:

  • Atlanta (Hartsfield-Jackson)
  • Chicago O’Hare
  • Dallas-Fort Worth
  • Denver
  • Detroit Metro
  • Las Vegas (Harry Reid)
  • Los Angeles (LAX)
  • New York (JFK and LaGuardia)
  • Newark Liberty
  • Portland (Oregon)
  • Salt Lake City
  • San Francisco
  • Seattle-Tacoma
  • Washington, D.C. (Reagan National)

The Bigger Picture

TSA officials say the expansion of Touchless ID marks the beginning of a larger push toward biometric-based screening across U.S. airports. While currently limited to PreCheck members, the program could eventually become more widely available as travelers grow comfortable with biometric verification and privacy safeguards.

For frequent flyers, this could mean shorter lines, less hassle, and a smoother airport experience — especially at major hubs where PreCheck queues often back up.
