President Donald Trump has called on the European Union to impose tariffs of up to 100% on imports from China and India. This proposal is part of a strategy to penalize both nations for continuing to purchase Russian oil, which the U.S. believes funds Moscow’s war efforts in Ukraine.
Trump made this request during a conference call with EU officials, including the EU’s sanctions envoy. He also indicated that the U.S. could impose similar tariffs if its European partners agree to follow suit. The EU has so far expressed reluctance, citing concerns about economic impact and potential retaliation.
India and China have strongly pushed back against the proposal. The new tariff demand marks another escalation in pressure tactics, building on earlier U.S. moves that imposed high tariffs on Indian products tied to Russian oil and other trade tensions.
