Ladakh Youth Protests Turn Deadly: “Gen Z Revolution” Demands Statehood and Autonomy

In Leh, Ladakh, a youth-led protest erupted after leaders staging a hunger strike demanding statehood and greater autonomy saw escalating tensions. What began as a peaceful call for constitutional safeguards turned deadly in confrontations with security forces. At least four young demonstrators were killed and over 70 injured during clashes. The unrest included attacks on a BJP office and a CRPF vehicle, prompting authorities to impose a curfew, ban gatherings of five or more people, and suspend internet access across the Union Territory.

The protests, organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), reflect deep frustration over what many locals view as unfulfilled promises since Ladakh was made a Union Territory in 2019. The movement gained momentum after the hospitalization of two elderly hunger strikers, which drove younger activists to join the cause.

The demonstrators’ core demands include full statehood, inclusion under the Sixth Schedule to protect land and culture, better local representation, and environmental safeguards. Protesters warn that without meaningful change, loss of identity, continued joblessness, and external exploitation might threaten Ladakh’s future.

On the government side, the home ministry criticized activist Sonam Wangchuk for inciting unrest using references to youth uprisings abroad. Meanwhile, local leaders accused the state of an excessive crackdown. The conflict has drawn national attention, particularly because Ladakh is strategically located along sensitive border regions.
