A tragic crowd crush unfolded at Vijay’s political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, resulting in many deaths and injuries. The incident occurred when a massive crowd surged toward his campaign vehicle, triggering chaos and panic.
Authorities say the rally had been permitted for about 10,000 people, but the actual gathering far exceeded that capacity. Over 27,000 supporters reportedly crowded the venue, many waiting in the intense heat without adequate water, shade, or medical assistance. Vijay arrived several hours late, prompting impatient supporters to press forward—this surge led to people being crushed near barricades.
By the time emergency services reached victims, many had already succumbed to their injuries. Among those killed were women and children. Over 120 people were taken to local hospitals, some in critical condition.
Tamil Nadu police have filed a criminal case against three party officials from Vijay’s party, though the actor himself is not named in the initial charges. A judicial commission led by a retired judge has been appointed to investigate the causes of the disaster.
Vijay expressed his profound sorrow, lamenting that no words could convey the pain he felt. He pledged support for families of the victims and called for a thorough inquiry. The Prime Minister and several other political leaders also issued condolences and demanded accountability.
The tragedy has again drawn attention to the risks of overcrowded political gatherings in India, especially when safety protocols and crowd management measures fail.
