Cochin Shipyard Delivers ‘Mahe’: First Indigenous Anti-Submarine Warfare Vessel to Indian Navy

On October 23, 2025, Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) delivered ‘Mahe’, the first of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWCs), to the Indian Navy. This delivery underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its maritime defense capabilities through indigenous shipbuilding.

‘Mahe’ is a 78-meter-long vessel with a displacement of approximately 1,100 tons. Designed for operations in shallow coastal waters, it is equipped with advanced underwater surveillance systems, torpedoes, and mine-laying capabilities. The vessel also features state-of-the-art radar and sonar systems, enabling effective detection and neutralization of underwater threats.

The ASW SWC project is part of India’s broader initiative to strengthen its naval forces with domestically produced assets, aligning with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) campaign. The delivery of ‘Mahe’ marks a significant step in this direction, showcasing CSL’s advanced shipbuilding capabilities and the nation’s growing self-reliance in defense production.

The remaining seven vessels in the ASW SWC series are under construction at CSL and are expected to be delivered to the Indian Navy in the coming years, further bolstering India’s coastal defense infrastructure.
