Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed that India’s greatest challenge is not external forces but the nation’s dependency on others. Speaking in Gujarat, he urged citizens to embrace self-reliance, saying that true freedom comes only when India builds its own strength.
His remarks followed the United States’ recent decisions—raising tariffs on Indian imports and introducing a $100,000 fee on H-1B visa applications. Modi said such developments highlight why India must focus on Atmanirbhar Bharat and reduce its reliance on foreign nations.
He criticized past policies, particularly during Congress rule, that created a license-raj system and promoted import dependency. According to Modi, reliance on other countries hampers growth and undermines India’s dignity. He emphasized that India must aim to produce everything domestically, from semiconductor chips to large ships.
Highlighting trade concerns, Modi noted that India spends nearly ₹6 lakh crore annually on foreign shipping services, an amount comparable to the nation’s defense budget. He stressed the need to strengthen domestic shipping, streamline trade processes, and modernize ports to achieve economic independence.
