A recent Harris Poll conducted for The Guardian indicates that 75% of Americans are experiencing rising monthly expenses, contradicting President Donald Trump’s assertions that inflation is “over” and prices are “way down.” Since Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, inflation has marginally decreased from 3% to 2.9%, still above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target.
The poll reveals that 74% of respondents have seen their monthly costs increase by $100 to $749. This trend spans across political affiliations, with Democrats, Republicans, and independents all reporting similar price hikes. Economic pessimism remains prevalent, with 54% believing the U.S. is in a recession and 53% stating that economic conditions are worsening.
Partisan perspectives on the causes of inflation differ. Republicans attribute rising prices to normal inflationary trends, while Democrats and independents point to current government policies and tariffs. Proposals from Democrats, such as a federal price-gouging ban and tax reforms, have garnered support, whereas Trump’s economic initiatives, including mass deportation and tariffs, are less favored.
The poll also highlights a decline in optimism for both major political parties. Support for Democrats has decreased from 37% to 25%, while Republican pessimism among independents has increased, indicating a volatile political climate ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
