Northeastern University has received a record-breaking 106,907 undergraduate applications for the 2026-2027 academic year, marking the seventh consecutive year the institution has surpassed its own application volume. This surge reflects a sustained interest in the university’s experiential learning model and global campus network, even as the broader higher education sector faces shifting demographic trends.

The 106,907 figure represents a significant increase from the previous year’s total of approximately 98,000 applications. University officials attribute the growth to the high demand for the school’s signature co-op program, which integrates professional work experience with traditional classroom study. Satyajit Dattagupta, Northeastern’s chief enrollment management officer, noted that the return on investment provided by these professional opportunities remains the primary driver for both domestic and international candidates.

Geographically, the university saw its highest domestic application volume from New York, Massachusetts, California, New Jersey, and Texas. Internationally, the candidate pool was led by students from China, India, South Korea, Canada, and Brazil. This diverse applicant base coincides with the university’s aggressive global expansion, which now includes 13 campuses across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

“Students and parents continue to cite the return on investment that Northeastern University’s co-op program, academics and global experiences bring,” said Satyajit Dattagupta.

Despite the record number of applicants, the university has maintained a highly selective admissions process. For the most recent completed cycle, the acceptance rate for the Boston campus sat at approximately 5.6%. Officials indicate that the increasing volume of applications allows the university to further enhance the academic profile and diversity of the incoming Class of 2030.
