UT Southwestern Professor Dr. Avneesh Chhabra, an internationally recognized leader in musculoskeletal radiology and one of the institution’s most influential educators, has achieved a rare milestone with his induction into the University of Texas System’s Shine Academy. The honor marks his third major teaching award, completing a “hat‑trick” that underscores his exceptional impact on medical education, clinical innovation, and faculty development across the UT System.
Dr. Chhabra, who serves as Professor of Radiology and Orthopaedic Surgery, Chief of the Musculoskeletal Radiology Division, and Chief of Musculoskeletal Imaging at Parkland Memorial Hospital, is widely admired for his ability to integrate cutting‑edge research with compassionate patient care and transformative teaching.
“Effective teaching, mentoring, and coaching promotes excellence in health science learning and educational scholarship with consistent incremental growth of learners, team building, and leadership development,” Dr. Chhabra said. “There is nothing that gives me more joy in my professional career than simplifying subject matter and highlighting truth in concepts for trainees, endeavors I am highly devoted to.”
A Systemwide Honor for a Systemwide Impact
The Shine Academy draws its membership from all eight UT System health institutions, including UT Southwestern, UTHealth Houston, UTMB Health, UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Dell Medical School at UT Austin. Inductees are selected for sustained excellence in educational scholarship, leadership, and innovation.
For Dr. Chhabra, the recognition reflects years of dedication to elevating health science education across the system.
“It is truly a great privilege and pleasure to be inducted into the prestigious Shine Academy,” he said. “Having taught in many countries, it will be an honor to share ideas and work collaboratively with the esteemed faculty in the UT System to positively serve the Shine Academy mission going forward.”
Completing a Hat‑Trick of Major Teaching Awards
Dr. Chhabra’s Shine Academy induction follows two other significant honors:
Membership in the UT Southwestern Academy of Teachers (SWAT), a selective body recognizing sustained excellence in teaching, curricular design, mentoring, and educational leadership.
Institutional teaching awards voted on by UT Southwestern faculty and trainees, recognizing his exemplary service in educating the next generation of physicians and leaders.
Together, these three distinctions form a rare trifecta of recognition.
“Students trust him, residents rely on him, and faculty look to him for guidance. His impact is felt at every level of the institution,” said a UT Southwestern colleague. “This hat‑trick of awards reflects not only his mastery of musculoskeletal imaging but also his extraordinary commitment to learners.”
A Global Innovator in Musculoskeletal Imaging
Beyond his educational achievements, Dr. Chhabra is a pioneer in advanced musculoskeletal imaging. At the University Hospital Radiology Clinic, he leads innovations in magnetic resonance neurography (MRN), a technique that maps peripheral neuropathy with unprecedented precision. His work guides surgical planning and enables targeted perineural injections and ablations for patients with complex nerve disorders.
His expertise extends to:
3D MRI for enhanced visualization of joint and soft‑tissue structures
Multiparametric imaging using ACR‑endorsed RADS frameworks
Improved diagnostic pathways for meniscal, labral, and rotator cuff injuries
Advanced imaging of bone and soft tissue sarcomas, infections, and axial spondyloarthritis
These innovations have made him a sought‑after speaker at national and international conferences, where he frequently lectures on emerging imaging technologies and clinical applications.
A Mentor and Coach Shaping Future Leaders
Dr. Chhabra’s influence extends far beyond the reading room and lecture hall. As a professional certified faculty coach, he mentors medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty, focusing on leadership development, career growth, and academic excellence.
“He has an extraordinary ability to see potential in people before they see it in themselves,” said one trainee. “His mentorship has changed the trajectory of countless careers.”
A Journey Rooted in Global Training and Lifelong Learning
Originally from India, Dr. Chhabra earned his M.B.B.S. from Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi and completed his radiology residency at Delhi University’s Willington Hospital. He later trained in diagnostic radiology at Drexel University College of Medicine and completed a musculoskeletal radiology fellowship at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. In 2021, he earned an Executive M.B.A. in healthcare leadership and management from UT Dallas.
A Legacy of Excellence Across the UT System
With his induction into the Shine Academy, Dr. Chhabra joins a distinguished group of educators whose influence spans the UT System’s health institutions. His hat‑trick of teaching honors reflects a career defined by innovation, mentorship, and an unwavering commitment to advancing the future of medicine.
