Pope Leo XIV met with representatives of the pontifical foundation Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) at the Vatican and emphasized the critical importance of religious freedom in today’s world.
He noted that hostility and violence against those who hold different beliefs—including many Christians—are on the rise. In response, he praised the foundation’s mission of not abandoning persecuted communities, and urged that the Church stand in solidarity with those facing hardship.
The Pope declared that religious freedom is “not optional but essential,” grounded in human dignity, and vital for allowing individuals and communities to seek, live, and witness truth. He warned that denying such freedom undermines the moral and spiritual bonds that sustain society.
Drawing on the Church’s teachings and the Second Vatican Council’s declaration Dignitatis Humanae, he pointed out that religious freedom is not merely a legal privilege, but a foundation for reconciliation, conscience formation, and social harmony.
The Pope acknowledged ACN’s role in producing its biennial Religious Freedom in the World Report, describing it as a powerful instrument to shine light on suffering and to support minority Christian communities. He cited the foundation’s work in countries such as Burkina Faso, Mozambique, and the Central African Republic, helping rebuild chapels, provide transportation, and support religious figures.
He concluded by encouraging perseverance in charitable service, invoking blessings and expressing gratitude to those serving in difficult contexts.
