Egypt’s Khaled el-Anani to Lead UNESCO as Director-General Amid Global Funding Challenges

The Executive Board of UNESCO has officially nominated Khaled el-Anani, Egypt’s former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, as the organization’s next Director-General. If confirmed by the General Conference in November, he will become the first Arab to lead UNESCO.

El-Anani secured a decisive victory in the board’s vote against candidate Firmin Edouard Matoko from the Republic of Congo. His nomination now moves to the final approval stage, where 194 member states will cast their votes.

A renowned Egyptologist and heritage expert, El-Anani previously oversaw key cultural projects in Egypt, including the development of major museums and archaeological sites. His leadership focused on promoting cultural tourism and preserving Egypt’s ancient legacy.

As the incoming head, El-Anani faces significant challenges, most notably UNESCO’s growing financial strain due to reduced contributions following the withdrawal of certain major member states. He has expressed his commitment to strengthening UNESCO’s work in education, science, and culture while fostering new partnerships and innovative funding mechanisms.

El-Anani’s nomination comes at a crucial moment when UNESCO’s role in protecting world heritage and advancing global cooperation is being tested by geopolitical shifts and funding uncertainty. His leadership is expected to bring renewed focus on collaboration, sustainability, and cultural diplomacy.
