The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha has expressed relief and satisfaction at the U.S. Department of Justice’s and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for New Jersey’s decision to end the investigation into the BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham temple. The probe, which began in 2021, was launched over accusations of labor violations and caste discrimination during the temple’s construction.
From the start, BAPS has consistently denied the allegations, insisting that there was no wrongdoing. The organization welcomed the DOJ’s move as a vindication, saying that this outcome confirms their long-held belief that “truth will prevail.”
The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), a Hindu advocacy group, praised the development. CoHNA criticized what they described as “sensational media coverage” and allegations that were amplified without strong evidence. They called on media outlets, policymakers, and institutions to be more careful in reporting or acting on unverified claims.
Though the criminal investigation has been closed, the civil lawsuit connected to these allegations remains intact and is expected to move forward in court. BAPS and its legal representatives say they will work with plaintiffs to decide next steps. The case’s end has been viewed by supporters as a restoration of integrity for the temple and for Hindu institutions that felt unfairly targeted.
