BOSTON — At the New England Choice Awards Gala, the New England Malayalee Association (NEMA) was recognized as the 2025 Non-Profit Organization of the Year, celebrating its two decades of work promoting culture, community, and support across Indian American communities in New England.
Founded in 2004, NEMA serves members in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, engaging more than 5,000 individuals annually. Its mission blends the preservation of Kerala’s traditional arts, language, and heritage with inclusive programming that welcomes a broader audience.
Priyanka Ranjith, NEMA’s president, described the accolade not just as recognition of past achievements, but as an affirmation of the organization’s future. She emphasized NEMA’s ongoing commitment to creating a space where younger generations feel connected to their heritage and where diversity is celebrated.
Among NEMA’s standout offerings:
- Seasonal cultural festivals like Onam and Vishu, showcasing traditional performances and community rituals
- Cross-cultural celebrations including Diwali and Christmas, promoting unity
- Youth leadership and talent programs, such as dance, speech, and visual arts
- Drishya, the organization’s flagship cultural competition, which in 2025 marked its 15th year and drew over 3,000 participants
Beyond cultural events, NEMA also champions health, wellness, and community service. Recent initiatives include free CPR training, wellness challenges, regional sports tournaments, and partnerships with organizations offering emergency assistance.
Operating entirely through volunteer leadership, NEMA’s board, general secretary, and over 100 committee members embody its spirit of service, transparency, and innovation.
As New England becomes more diverse, NEMA’s model — blending heritage with community engagement — offers a compelling blueprint for belonging and cultural continuity.
