Chennai: The makers of the upcoming spiritual supernatural thriller Trikanda, directed by Mani Thellagutie, are eyeing a theatrical release on January 23, positioning the film as a faith-infused cinematic experience aimed at audiences drawn to spiritual themes and mythological undertones.

The film stars Mahendran and Shraddha Das in the lead roles and promises a gripping blend of supernatural suspense, psychological drama, and intense action. While the release date is yet to be officially confirmed, the production team believes the timing could align strongly with the sentiments and viewing habits of its core audience.

Targeting the faith-driven audience

Speaking exclusively to IANS, producer Srinivas revealed that the proposed release window has been carefully considered.

“We are considering releasing the film on January 23 next year because devout believers of God are our target audience. Many of them travel to Sabarimala on pilgrimage. We want to release the film once they return. However, nothing has been finalised yet,” Srinivas said.

The comment underlines the film’s strong spiritual core and the makers’ intent to connect with audiences who are deeply rooted in faith, ritual, and belief systems. With Sabarimala pilgrimages typically concluding by mid-January, the timing is expected to maximize footfalls among devotees returning home.

Shot across Chennai and Hyderabad

Trikanda was filmed over a span of 60 to 70 days, with key portions shot across Chennai and Hyderabad. According to the production team, the film demanded carefully designed sets, elaborate visual effects, and stylised action sequences to bring its supernatural elements to life.

The recently released trailer, unveiled at Prasad Lab in Chennai in the presence of the media, has already generated buzz. It opens with eerie visuals of dark forces at work, accompanied by a haunting voiceover:

“We wage a war for it to dawn. But the war waged by this demon of darkness is to prevent dawn from arriving forever.”

The ominous tone immediately establishes the film’s central conflict — a cosmic struggle between light and darkness, good and evil.

Faith, science, and the supernatural collide

The trailer hints at a narrative where fear grips devotees as a mysterious and powerful force falls into the wrong hands, threatening the very existence of the world. Mahendran’s character is introduced through a series of high-octane action sequences, positioning him as a crucial figure in this unfolding spiritual battle.

Shraddha Das plays a psychiatrist dealing with complex and disturbing cases. In a compelling twist, her character initially diagnoses a patient with bipolar disorder, only to gradually realize that the symptoms may be rooted in something far more sinister — supernatural possession. This narrative turn sets up a compelling clash between faith and science, grounding the film’s spiritual themes in a contemporary psychological context.

Strong ensemble cast and technical strength

In addition to the lead pair, Trikanda features a large ensemble cast including Ajay, Sahithi Avancha, Nandha Durairaj, Amani, Master Mahendran, Robo Shankar, Rowdy Rohini, ETV Prabhakar, Ambati Arjun, Spyder Sanjay, Kalloori Vinoth, and Sai Dheena, all playing significant roles in the narrative.

On the technical front, the film boasts an experienced crew. Cinematography is handled by Pavan Chenna, while music has been composed by Harshavardhan Rameshwar and Shajith Humayun. Art direction is by C.S. Saimani, with lyrics penned by Mutamil and Vivek.

Action sequences — a major highlight judging by the trailer — have been choreographed by Anji, Nandu, Venkat Diamond, and Shanker, while dance choreography is by Suchitra Chandrabose.

The film is produced by Radhika Srinivas and presented by Rithvik Vetsha.

A spiritual thriller with commercial ambition

With its blend of mythology, psychology, and mass-action elements, Trikanda appears positioned to tap into the growing appetite for spiritually themed thrillers in Indian cinema. The makers believe the film’s narrative — rooted in belief systems yet framed within a modern context — will resonate with audiences seeking both spectacle and substance.

As anticipation builds and the release date inches closer, all eyes are now on whether January 23 will indeed mark the film’s arrival on the big screen, ushering in what the team hopes will be a spiritually charged cinematic experience.
