Following a period of stagnant box office returns in 2026, Ranveer Singh’s ‘Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge’ has emerged as a theatrical juggernaut, with early ticket sales and paid previews pacing toward a historic Rs 150 crore opening weekend. The film’s unprecedented four-hour runtime and premium ticket pricing haven’t deterred audiences, signaling a massive shift in consumer appetite for “event cinema.”

The Hindi film industry, which has spent much of 2026 searching for a definitive hit, appears to have found its savior in the most unlikely of places: a nearly four-hour-long revenge epic. Ranveer Singh’s latest outing, Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge, is currently rewriting the rulebook for Indian box office dynamics, turning its prequel into what many now consider a mere “teaser” for the cultural phenomenon currently unfolding in theaters across the country.

Data from the first wave of advance bookings suggests a level of mania not seen since the post-pandemic recovery. The film has already moved over 1.3 million tickets for its combined paid previews and opening day. Specifically, paid previews accounted for 8.26 lakh tickets, while opening day sales have already touched 6.75 lakh. In financial terms, the domestic advance booking revenue—excluding blocked seats—is on a trajectory to surpass Rs 60 crore, with paid previews alone contributing a staggering Rs 37.09 crore.

A Ray of Hope for Exhibitors

For distributors and theater owners, the success of Dhurandhar 2 is more than just a win for a single studio; it is a vital injection of capital into a struggling ecosystem. Raj Bansal, a veteran North India distributor, told SCREEN that the industry is “over the moon.” He noted that 2026 has been particularly unkind to Hindi cinema, with few films managing to occupy screens for more than a week.

“The year 2026 has not been very kind to Hindi films, except the original Dhurandhar,” Bansal observed. “Now, the sequel is bringing a fresh wave—a ray of hope. We couldn’t have imagined such huge numbers for paid previews. Previously, the record was around Rs 8.5 crore; we are now looking at Rs 35 crore-plus for previews alone.”

The aggressive revenue is partly driven by a bold pricing strategy. In major metros and even Tier-2 cities like Jaipur, ticket prices for preview shows have surged to unprecedented levels, reaching as high as Rs 3,000 in some premium venues. While these prices are expected to normalize on the official opening day, the “die-hard fan” effect has already ensured a massive cash influx before the first official Friday show even begins.

The Challenge of the Four-Hour Runtime

Despite the fervor, Dhurandhar 2 faces a unique logistical hurdle: its duration. Clocking in at 3 hours and 55 minutes, the film limits the number of shows a single screen can host in a 24-hour cycle. This “cinematic bonanza,” as described by Akkshay Rathie, Director of Ashirwad Theatres Pvt Ltd, requires meticulous show-count optimization to ensure the theatrical ecosystem can meet demand.

Bansal predicts the opening day figure will settle around Rs 55 crore, a number that might seem “modest” only in comparison to the inflated preview figures. The logic is simple: a significant portion of the core audience is exhausting their appetite during the Wednesday and Thursday previews. However, the momentum is expected to carry the film comfortably past the Rs 150 crore mark for its opening weekend, excluding those preview collections.

Global Aspirations and New Benchmarks

The optimism isn’t confined to the Indian subcontinent. Early reports from North America and other overseas markets indicate that ticket sales are tracking toward “history being created.” Rathie remains even more bullish than his peers, setting a target of Rs 80 crore for the first day, hoping to set new benchmarks for the highest opening day and, eventually, the highest lifetime collection in the history of Hindi cinema.

As the industry watches closely, Dhurandhar 2 is proving that the “slow year” of 2026 may have simply been the quiet before the storm. For Ranveer Singh, the film marks a definitive return to superstardom, cementing his status as the premier draw for the Indian “big screen” experience. Whether the film can maintain this velocity throughout its lifetime remains to be seen, but for the exhibitors and distributors currently “rooting for the film,” the revival of the theatrical business is already a reality.
