A Broadway-style dance drama based on the story of Lord Shiva captivated a full house in Edison, setting a new benchmark for Indian cultural theater in the United States.

Titled Shivleela, the large-scale production was directed and choreographed by U.S.-based artist Varsha Naik and staged by Navrang Dance Academy at J.P. Stevens High School. Organizers said more than 709 audience members attended the performance, which also drew distinguished guests from across the tri-state area.

The production brought together 70 artists and volunteers, with a total of 108 contributors involved behind the scenes and on stage. Blending classical Indian storytelling with Broadway-inspired presentation, the show used dance, drama and theatrical staging to narrate the powerful tale of Lord Shiva.

Naik, founder and director of Navrang Dance Academy, described the event as a significant moment for the institution, marking its first grand home production in 13 years of promoting Indian culture through dance and storytelling.

Lighting and sound design were central to the experience, with technical direction by Shrikant Gavas enhancing the show’s visual and auditory impact. Organizers called it a fully immersive theatrical presentation.

Among the evening’s special guests was Sam Joshi, mayor of Edison Township, who praised the production’s cultural significance.

“Varsha Naik is keeping Indian culture alive in the USA by creating meaningful dramas through storytelling and helping the community stay connected to their roots,” Joshi said in a statement.

A standout performance came from Mumbai-based dancer and choreographer Sandip Soparrkar, who portrayed Mahadev with commanding stage presence and emotional depth. Students and artists from Navrang Dance Academy formed the core of the ensemble cast.

Key supporters included Raj Pandya of the Pandya Foundation and Vaidehi Dongre Pandya, who lauded the production and expressed interest in backing future projects centered on Lord Shiva and Indian heritage. Additional sponsorship came from Suhag Jewelers, represented by Surendra Singh and Anu Kumari.

Community partners included S N Tours and Travels, A2Z Entertainment, Cultivate Talent – Bhajan Clubbing, UPFNA, Guru Ji Ka Mandir, Sohanika, Mukesh Modi, World Peace Harmony, BCB Bank, Valam Foods, Samosa Factory, Mejwani, Sai Cat Caterers, Patel Brothers, Simran Aahuja, Sewa International, Menlo Park Leo Club and AIM Finances.

Encouraged by the overwhelming response, organizers said they plan to take Shivleela to additional cities across the United States, continuing their mission of celebrating Indian culture through large-scale theatrical productions.
