A proud moment for Kalaburagi and India—economist SP Kothari, originally from this historic city in Karnataka, has clinched the prestigious role of Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy at the U.S. Treasury Department.
His journey is as remarkable as his new appointment. After beginning his academic path at Government College in Kalaburagi, he advanced to BITS Pilani and IIM Ahmedabad, before completing a doctorate in the U.S. Today, he serves as the Gordon Y. Billard Professor of Accounting and Finance at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and is a recipient of the distinguished Padma Shri award.
In his new federal role, Kothari joins the elite ranks shaping U.S. economic strategy. He previously led economic and risk analysis at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and held top leadership positions at MIT. His expertise spans financial markets, corporate governance, and economic policymaking—making him ideally suited for this role.
Local leaders and alumni are celebrating this milestone, calling it a testament to talent and determination, and an inspiring beacon for aspiring economists from India’s smaller cities.
