In a significant boost to India–Germany relations and people-to-people connectivity, Germany has announced visa-free airport transit for Indian passport holders following high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Ahmedabad. The move marks an important easing of travel norms for Indian nationals and reflects the deepening strategic partnership between the two countries amid shifting global geopolitical dynamics.
The announcement came as India and Germany unveiled a broad set of measures aimed at strengthening cooperation across key sectors such as defence, trade, critical minerals, semiconductors, higher education, and telecommunications. Addressing the development, Chancellor Merz said the decision to allow visa-free transit for Indians would “further strengthen people-to-people ties and enhance mobility between our two nations.”
Prime Minister Modi welcomed the move and expressed appreciation for Germany’s gesture. “I express my gratitude to Chancellor Merz for announcing visa-free transit for Indian citizens. This decision will greatly benefit Indian travellers and reflects the growing trust and partnership between India and Germany,” the Prime Minister said.
What Visa-Free Transit Means for Indian Travellers
Until now, Indian nationals transiting through German airports were required to obtain a Schengen airport transit visa, also known as a Category A visa. This requirement applied even when travellers remained within the international transit zone and did not formally enter German territory or the wider Schengen area. Major transit hubs such as Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin were covered under this rule, often adding time, cost, and procedural hurdles for Indian passengers.
Under the new arrangement, Indian passport holders will be able to transit through German airports without the need for a Schengen transit visa, making international travel smoother and more efficient. The decision is expected to particularly benefit students, professionals, and tourists who frequently use Germany as a transit point for onward journeys to Europe, North America, and other global destinations.
Strengthening Historical and Cultural Ties
During the discussions, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the deep-rooted historical and cultural connections between India and Germany. Recalling iconic figures who symbolise intellectual and cultural exchanges between the two nations, he said, “The ties between India and Germany are not new. Thinkers and leaders like Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, and Madam Bhikaji Cama reflect the long-standing cultural and philosophical engagement between our societies.”
“Today, we are transforming this historical connection into a modern, future-oriented partnership,”
