The Federation of Indian American Christian Organizations of North America (FIACONA) marked its Silver Jubilee year with a significant Christmas celebration in New York, reaffirming its enduring commitment to religious freedom and its solidarity with persecuted Christians, particularly in India. The event brought together clergy, community leaders, and faithful from across the United States, underscoring FIACONA’s role as a unified voice for Indian American Christians in North America.
Held at the Gateway Christian Center in Valley Stream, New York, the celebration commenced at 10:00 a.m. and blended worship, reflection, recognition, and advocacy. While rooted in the spirit of Christmas, the gathering also served as a platform to reiterate FIACONA’s long-standing mission of defending religious liberty and amplifying the concerns of vulnerable Christian communities.
The program was formally inaugurated by His Grace Bishop Dr. Ayub Mar Silvanos, Regional Metropolitan of the Malankara Syrian Knanaya Church in North America. In his opening remarks, Bishop Silvanos emphasized the responsibility of the global Christian community to remain vigilant in defending freedom of faith.
“Christmas is not merely a celebration of joy; it is a reminder of hope born amid hardship,” he said. “At this moment in history, our faith calls us to stand with those whose freedom to worship is under threat.”
A Message of Faith and Resilience
The Christmas message was delivered by Rev. Fr. Dr. Johnson Thekkadayil, Bishop Commissary of the Evangelical Church of Malabar and a well-known Christian apologist. Addressing the congregation, he spoke about resilience and unity in the face of persecution.
“Faith has always grown stronger under pressure,” Rev. Fr. Thekkadayil noted. “The story of Christianity is one of endurance, and today we are reminded that solidarity across borders is essential to protecting human dignity.”
Believers and clergy representing multiple Christian denominations participated in the service, reflecting FIACONA’s ecumenical character and its expanding national presence across the United States and Canada.
Honouring 25 Years of Leadership and Service
As part of FIACONA’s Silver Jubilee observances, the organization honoured senior leaders who have played pivotal roles in shaping its mission over the past 25 years. Awards recognizing faithful service and enduring contributions were presented to Koshy George, George Abraham, Pastor Itty Jacob, Rev. V. K. Macwana, Rev. Jatwinder Gill, Thomas Mottakkal, David Babu, Pastor Wilson Jose, Rev. Sunny Philip, and Rev. Sam Joshua.
Presenting the awards, Bishop Dr. Ayub Mar Silvanos acknowledged the collective efforts that have sustained FIACONA’s advocacy. “Institutions endure because of people who serve quietly and consistently,” he said. “These leaders have strengthened FIACONA’s foundation and vision.”
Worship, Advocacy, and a United Voice
Worship during the celebration was led by the choirs of Gateway Christian Church and Bethlehem Punjabi Church, New York, adding a multicultural dimension to the program. The musical offerings highlighted the diversity of Indian Christianity and reinforced the theme of unity.
Addresses were delivered by FIACONA President Bimal John, Advocacy Director Stanley George, and Executive Committee members Dr. Alvin Joseph, George Chacko, Paul Varkey, and Pastor Mark Haokip. Speakers reflected on FIACONA’s advocacy work, particularly its engagement with policymakers, human rights organizations, and faith-based institutions to raise awareness about persecution of Christians in India.
“Our mission is rooted in truth and compassion,” said President Bimal John. “FIACONA exists to ensure that the voices of those who suffer for their faith are not ignored on the global stage.”
Standing with Persecuted Christians in India
Solidarity with persecuted Christians in India emerged as the central theme of the Silver Jubilee Christmas celebration. Speakers highlighted ongoing challenges faced by Christian communities, including restrictions on worship and social discrimination.
Advocacy Director Stanley George emphasized FIACONA’s approach of constructive engagement. “Our work is grounded in prayer, awareness, and dialogue,” he said. “We believe that sustained engagement with governments, civil society, and international institutions is essential to advancing religious freedom.”
Participants were reminded that FIACONA’s advocacy extends beyond statements, encompassing education, coalition-building, and outreach aimed at fostering long-term change.
A Renewed Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, FIACONA’s leadership outlined a renewed vision for the organization as it enters its next phase. Plans include deeper collaboration with churches, increased involvement of younger leaders, and expanded dialogue with governments and global partners.
“A new chapter lies ahead,” said an Executive Committee member. “We are committed to building bridges across denominations and generations so that Indian American Christians can speak with one voice for religious freedom and human dignity.”
Fellowship and Closing
The welcome address was delivered by Varghese Abraham, Executive Committee Member of FIACONA, while Operations Director Sam Thomas offered the vote of thanks. The event concluded with a fellowship lunch, allowing participants to strengthen relationships and renew their shared commitment to FIACONA’s mission.
As FIACONA marks 25 years of service, the Silver Jubilee Christmas celebration stood as both a reflection on past achievements and a reaffirmation of purpose—anchored in faith, unity, and advocacy for those whose freedom to worship remains under threat.
