Pope Leo XIV Begins to Reveal His Unique Leadership Style

Pope Leo XIV’s first international journey reflected unmistakable continuity with the papacy of Pope Francis—yet clear distinctions are also beginning to surface. As Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich noted shortly after the conclave, a pope is not a “replacement” but a successor. Pope Leo XIV may walk a path similar to Francis, but he is not a replica. He is establishing his own identity.

Echoes of Francis: Presence in Small Catholic Communities

Like Francis, Pope Leo chose to visit a nation with only a tiny Catholic population—Turkey. Francis made a similar symbolic gesture by traveling to Mongolia, where the Catholic community is even smaller. By visiting places where Catholics are few, both pontiffs underline the Church’s global mission to strengthen and encourage the marginalized faithful.

Leo’s itinerary included meetings with youth, the elderly, religious leaders, and civil authorities—mirroring Francis’ inclusive pastoral priorities.

Promoting Christian Unity

A major theme of Leo’s trip was Christian unity, especially as the global Church approaches the 2,000th anniversary of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection in 2033. The powerful scene at Nicaea—where the pope stood alongside nearly all Eastern patriarchs—symbolized a new step toward restoring full communion between East and West. Leo’s warm rapport with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew evoked memories of Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras’ historic meeting in 1964.

A Notable Departure From Francis: The Mosque Visit

One clear difference emerged: Pope Leo did not pray inside Istanbul’s Blue Mosque. Traditionalists initially attempted to use this to portray Leo as more conservative—especially after he wore the scarlet mozzetta on the balcony after his election. But when observers recalled that Benedict XVI had prayed in the mosque, those claims collapsed.

A Sharper Theological Tone

At a gathering with local clergy and religious, Pope Leo issued a strong caution against what he called a “new Arianism”—a modern attitude that reduces Jesus to merely a great historical figure or moral teacher rather than the living Son of God.

While Francis could have delivered a similar message, Leo’s framing through the lens of heresy reflects a more doctrinally precise style. Francis focused more on urging spiritual action; Leo stresses both movement and boundaries—pastoral zeal anchored with clear guardrails.

Firmness Toward Canon Law

This same balance emerged when Pope Leo addressed canon lawyers who were studying the annulment reforms introduced under Francis. While he affirmed those reforms, Leo warned against “false mercy,” insisting that compassion must not distort the truth of marriage or the integrity of juridical processes.

Unlike Francis—who frequently critiqued excessive legalism—Leo, trained as a canon lawyer, emphasized the harmony between theology, law, and pastoral care. Rather than treating them as competing realities, he insisted they must work together as parts of one unified ecclesial vision.

A Successor in Continuity—Yet Distinct

Pope Leo XIV clearly stands within the post–Vatican II tradition shaped by John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis. Yet the differences between Francis (a Jesuit shaped by exile and missionary experience) and Leo (an Augustinian and a canonist) are already influencing how he teaches and governs.

Where Francis brought Ignatian spirituality to the papacy, Leo brings the introspective and doctrinal richness of Augustine. These differences will enrich the Church in complementary ways.

A Parallel to History

Just as Pope Paul VI continued and completed the reforms initiated by John XXIII, Pope Leo XIV appears poised to guide and solidify the synodal path begun by Francis. Early signs suggest he will be:

  • committed to the same broad mission
  • more cautious and structured in his leadership
  • pastorally gentle, but administratively firm

In short, Pope Leo XIV is emerging not as a replacement for Francis, but as a steady successor—someone who honors the trajectory of the previous papacy while shaping it with his own temperament and gifts.
