India’s exports to the United States have taken a major hit following the introduction of new tariffs, recording a steep fall of 28.5%, according to recent trade analysis. The sudden rise in import duties has significantly weakened the demand for Indian goods in the American market, raising serious concerns for exporters and policymakers alike.
Trade experts warn that labour-intensive industries, including textiles, leather, gems and jewellery, and engineering goods, are bearing the brunt of this slowdown. These sectors employ millions of workers and are especially sensitive to changes in export demand, making the tariff impact even more alarming from both economic and employment perspectives.
The sharp drop in shipments is expected to widen India’s trade imbalance with the US and may slow overall manufacturing growth if corrective steps are not taken quickly. Analysts are urging the government to engage in urgent diplomatic discussions with US authorities to prevent long-term damage to India’s export ecosystem.
Policy think tanks have also called for immediate domestic support measures such as export incentives, tax relief, and improved trade facilitation to help affected industries remain competitive. Without quick intervention, experts caution that prolonged tariff pressure could weaken India’s position in the global supply chain.
