The Vatican has released a new doctrinal decree, formally approved by Pope Leo, reaffirming that Catholics are called to a lifelong commitment with one spouse only. The directive strongly discourages multiple sexual relationships and explicitly denounces the practice of polygamy.
Issued by the Holy See’s top doctrinal authority, the document reinforces the Church’s teaching that marriage is an exclusive, lifelong union between one man and one woman. The decree does not address same-sex unions but instead highlights the spiritual and moral value of traditional marriage.
Exclusive Commitment Emphasized
The Vatican stressed that true marriage requires total and exclusive devotion between two individuals of equal dignity and rights.
“Every authentic marriage is a unity of two persons that demands an intimate relationship too complete to be shared with others,” the decree stated.
It further added that the equality of both partners makes exclusivity a moral necessity within marriage.
Focus on Polygamy and Polyamory
The document openly criticizes polygamy, including its continued presence among some Catholic communities in Africa, where long-standing cultural traditions still support multiple committed relationships.
The issue was a major topic of debate during two global Vatican summits held in 2023 and 2024, convened by the late Pope Francis to discuss the future of Catholic teachings and pastoral challenges. Cardinals and bishops from around the world addressed how the Church should respond to such practices.
The decree also addresses the rise of polyamorous relationships in parts of the Western world, where individuals may maintain multiple romantic partnerships at the same time.
It states that polygamy, adultery, and polyamory are rooted in a false belief that emotional depth can be achieved through multiple partners.
Clarification on Divorce and Annulment
While the decree does not mention divorce, it reaffirms the Church’s long-held teaching that marriage is permanent and indissoluble. However, the Vatican continues to recognize the process of marriage annulment, which determines whether a valid sacramental marriage ever existed.
The Church also reiterates that individuals are not required to remain in abusive relationships, emphasizing the protection of personal dignity and safety.
A Clear Message to the Global Catholic Community
With this new decree, the Vatican aims to ensure doctrinal clarity for the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics, reinforcing the belief that faithful, exclusive, and lifelong commitment remains the foundation of Christian marriage.
