A new transparency feature on X has revealed that several major “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) influencers on the platform are actually based in countries far from the United States — including Russia, Nigeria, India, and parts of Europe.
The tool, called “About This Account,” launched on Friday for all users of the Elon Musk–owned platform. It displays key information such as the account’s location, join date, username history, and how the X app was originally downloaded.
Almost immediately after the feature became available, users began uncovering that many accounts promoting MAGA ideology — often portraying themselves as patriotic Americans — were managed from abroad.
Liberal content creator Harry Sisson celebrated the findings, writing:
“This is easily one of the greatest days on this platform. Watching these MAGA accounts get exposed as foreign actors trying to damage the United States is complete vindication for Democrats who have been warning about this.”
According to the Daily Beast, the account MAGANationX — which has nearly 400,000 followers and a bio that reads “Patriot Voice for We The People” — is run from eastern Europe. Another highly popular profile, IvankaNews, an Ivanka Trump fan page with nearly a million followers, was revealed to be operating out of Nigeria despite frequently posting about U.S. immigration, Islam, and pro-Trump content.
Other users identified additional cases:
- Dark Maga (15,000 followers) → operating from Thailand
- MAGA Scope (51,000+ followers) → based in Nigeria
- MAGA Beacon → located somewhere in South Asia
Reddit users also joined the effort, sharing screenshots of accounts claiming to be located in U.S. states such as Texas but showing foreign locations such as Russia. Some accounts later switched to U.S. location tags after being called out.
The exposure highlights a long-standing issue on the platform: bots and foreign operators spreading misinformation, political propaganda, and polarizing content. Critics say this problem has worsened significantly since Elon Musk acquired Twitter in October 2022 and rebranded it as X.
X’s AI chatbot, Grok, has also come under scrutiny for frequently generating or amplifying false claims, further raising concerns over misinformation on the platform.
