The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) International and its New York chapters organized a memorable Meet and Greet luncheon featuring Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi, former Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture of India. The event took place on November 5th at Hotel Lexington Plaza in Manhattan and brought together GOPIO members, chapter officials, community leaders, and media representatives.

The luncheon was hosted by GOPIO Life Member Ashok Bhatt. GOPIO Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham spoke passionately about the organization’s mission and its many accomplishments in empowering People of Indian Origin (PIOs) worldwide. GOPIO President Prakash Shah provided a historical perspective on the Indian Diaspora, highlighting the ancient roots of Indian culture spreading across Southeast Asia, where majestic Hindu temples still stand. He underlined the importance of India’s closer engagement with the global Diaspora, now comprising over 35 million people.

Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi addressed the gathering, emphasizing the critical role the Indian Diaspora plays in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields in Western countries. She acknowledged how the Diaspora’s expertise has elevated India’s global standing and answered questions from attendees with insightful perspectives.

In a symbolic gesture, GOPIO presented Smt. Lekhi with collector’s items: two designs of First Day Covers released by the U.S. Postal Service at the First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin, held in New York in 1989 – a historic event marking GOPIO’s inception.

The event exemplified GOPIO’s ongoing dedication to fostering connections among the global Indian community, celebrating cultural heritage, and encouraging professional and social advancement.
