The Miss Universe 2025 competition became the scene of unexpected controversy during a live-streamed sashing ceremony in Bangkok, as tensions between pageant officials and contestants erupted publicly. The issue centered around Nawat Itsaragrisil, president of Miss Grand International and the Miss Universe Thailand Host Committee chairman, and Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch.

On November 4, Nawat confronted Bosch after she missed a sponsorship photo shoot to participate in a Telemundo filming. During the confrontation, he was heard sharply demanding the contestants to remain seated, saying, “Stop. Stop! Sit down. If anyone wants to continue the contest, sit down,” while some contestants stood in protest. Shortly thereafter, Bosch exited the event, followed by several delegates who showed solidarity by walking out as well.

The situation intensified when, in a separate video, Nawat singled out Miss Mexico, stating that everyone was invited back except for her, accusing her of “talking too much.” Bosch later took to social media to express her feelings, condemning the pageant president’s disrespect and asserting that no woman’s voice should be silenced on a platform meant for empowerment.

Support for Bosch poured in from fellow contestants, including Miss Universe 2024 Victoria Kjær Theilvig, who praised Bosch’s courage to stand up for herself and emphasized the importance of self-respect and voiced strength. Other pageant participants called for reconciliation and a harmonious environment among contestants.

In response to the escalating conflict, the Miss Universe Organization launched an internal review and sent a team led by CEO Mario Búcaro to Thailand to ensure a safe and professional environment for all contestants, reaffirming their commitment to transparency and unity. Despite the turmoil, the main pageant schedule continued as planned.

Following the incident, the MUO took decisive disciplinary steps against Nawat Itsaragrisil, significantly restricting his role and almost barring him from participating in the 74th Miss Universe events. Pageant president Raúl Rocha underscored that respect and professionalism are non-negotiable pillars of the organization.

In a heartfelt moment at the pageant’s welcome ceremony, Nawat appeared more vulnerable, apologizing to all present and expressing regret for escalating the situation, visibly emotional as he addressed the contestants and media. He also issued a formal apology via a livestream, apologizing especially to the approximately 75 women affected during the incident.

He assured that the Miss Universe CEO would soon arrive in Thailand to assist in managing the pageant affairs with the professionalism required, aiming to restore harmony and alignment within the organization. The episode has spotlighted the challenges behind the scenes in beauty pageants and emphasized the ongoing importance of respect, dignity, and empowerment for all participants.
