The White House has announced a significant trade truce between the United States and China after high-level talks held in Busan, South Korea. This agreement, hailed as a historic breakthrough by the administration, aims to ease tensions between the world’s two largest economies while safeguarding American interests and national security.
A key component of the pact includes the United States reducing tariffs on certain Chinese goods. In return, China has committed to several key actions: it will limit the supply of fentanyl precursor chemicals entering the U.S., suspend newly imposed export controls on rare earth minerals and magnets, reopen its markets to U.S. agricultural products such as soybeans, and lift retaliatory tariffs and sanctions imposed on major American companies.
Additionally, China pledged to purchase at least 12 million tons of U.S. soybeans by the end of the year and about 25 million tons annually over the next three years. The deal also includes China withdrawing all retaliatory tariffs imposed since March, eliminating non-tariff barriers targeting U.S. industries, and authorizing the export of semiconductors from foreign-owned plants within China.
The two leaders also agreed to conclude investigations related to U.S. semiconductor companies and to lift sanctions tied to maritime, logistics, and shipbuilding sectors. The White House emphasized that this agreement not only promotes economic growth but also strengthens bilateral cooperation on critical issues impacting global supply chains.
