Norwalk Sikh Center to Break Ground on Richards Avenue in 2025: Spotlight on Community Growth

The Sikh religious center in Norwalk is poised to begin construction on a new facility located on Richards Avenue, overcoming years of neighborhood opposition and legal challenges. The approved site spans just over one acre at 283 Richards Avenue, where an 18,000-square-foot, two-and-a-half-story building will be erected. The center will include parking for 53 vehicles and accommodate around 240 people for worship and community activities.

This project, spearheaded by the Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Foundation, is set to become a key spiritual and cultural hub for Norwalk’s Sikh community. Initial resistance from local residents centered on concerns about the size of the building, increased traffic, and the impact on the neighborhood’s character. Despite vocal opposition — including nearly 100 letters and emails submitted to city officials — the Norwalk Planning and Zoning Commission granted approval, emphasizing that decisions must be made based on law and city regulations rather than community fears.

Supporters of the gurdwara highlight the importance of offering a dedicated space not only for religious services but also for cultural education and social events. This project symbolizes the increasing cultural diversity of Norwalk and reflects broader acceptance of various religious identities within the city.

Once complete, the Sikh center is expected to be a vibrant addition to Norwalk’s multicultural landscape and a gathering place that fosters community cohesion and spiritual growth.
