The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) recently formed a dedicated task force to explore the creation of a museum in India honoring the Indian diaspora. This initiative aims to create a vibrant institution that celebrates the rich history, cultural heritage, and contemporary accomplishments of Indian communities living abroad.
GOPIO International Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham described the envisioned museum as a dynamic space that will serve as a cultural bridge linking India with its widespread diaspora. It is intended to offer a venue for identity, remembrance, and connection for millions of Indians worldwide.
The task force, officially named the Indian Diaspora Museum Task Force, is composed of distinguished members including Indo-Australian Museum Curator Vinod Daniel, UK-based Professor Prabhu Guptara, Dr. Bhuvan Lall from the United States, Dr. Léna Armoudom from Réunion Island, and Isha Vyas also from the U.S.
To formally introduce the project and kick off its campaign, GOPIO has scheduled a virtual meeting on November 1, timed for global availability—11 a.m. New York time, 4 p.m. UK time, and 8:30 p.m. Indian Standard Time. Representatives of the Indian diaspora from various regions will share insights on which facets of diaspora history and culture should be highlighted in the museum.
Dr. Abraham emphasized the importance of the project by noting that India is the origin of the world’s largest diaspora population, with over 35 million people of Indian descent residing across more than 100 countries. He stated that these diaspora communities have not only adapted to their new homes but have also become vital ambassadors of Indian culture, values, and traditions on a global scale, contributing economically, culturally, and intellectually.
