During his recent trip to Asia, former U.S. President Donald Trump hinted that he has not ruled out running for a third term in office, stating, “I would love to do it.” However, he dismissed the possibility of becoming vice president as a backdoor route to reclaim the presidency, calling that idea “too cute” and saying it “wouldn’t be right.”
Speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he technically “would be allowed” to run again as vice president but made it clear he had no intention of doing so. “I think people wouldn’t like that,” he added.
When asked about his thoughts on a potential third term, Trump said he had not given it much consideration yet but mentioned, “I have the best poll numbers that I’ve ever had.”
Trump also praised Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, describing them as “unstoppable” and noting that the Republican Party has “a great group of people.”
The U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment prevents presidents from serving more than two elected terms. Repealing the amendment would require support from two-thirds of both houses of Congress and approval by three-fourths of U.S. state legislatures—an outcome viewed as highly unlikely by most political analysts.
Although speculation continues, Trump has previously said he would “probably not” run again, but he has also hinted that he’s “not joking” about the idea of returning to the race in 2028.
Meanwhile, several Democrats have already expressed interest in the next election cycle. California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris have both indicated they may consider running for the presidency.
