Health authorities have issued a nationwide recall for over 140,000 bottles of a popular cholesterol-lowering drug after identifying that certain batches may not dissolve properly in the body.
The affected product, atorvastatin calcium tablets—a generic version of a leading statin—was found to have “dissolution issues,” meaning the drug may not break down or absorb as intended. This could make the medication less effective at lowering cholesterol and protecting against heart disease, stroke, and related cardiovascular risks.
The recall has been classified as a Class II recall, which indicates that while the chances of severe harm are low, patients could still experience reduced therapeutic benefits if they continue using the affected medicine.
Patients currently taking atorvastatin are urged not to stop medication abruptly without consulting a healthcare provider. Instead, they should check the lot number and expiration date on their prescription bottle and speak with their pharmacist or physician for guidance on safe replacements.
