India–US Trade Deal Nears Completion with Major Tariff Cuts and Strategic Energy Talks

India and the United States are on the verge of finalizing a landmark trade agreement that could reshape bilateral economic relations. The deal is expected to bring a massive reduction in import tariffs on Indian goods — potentially lowering rates to nearly 15–16%, down from the current average of about 50%.

Energy and agricultural trade have become key pillars of the ongoing negotiations. India may agree to scale back its imports of discounted Russian crude oil in exchange for greater access to U.S. agricultural products such as non-genetically modified corn and soymeal. With nearly one-third of India’s crude currently sourced from Russia, the deal marks a potential shift in its energy strategy.

Both countries are working toward a dynamic framework that allows regular review of tariff structures and market access terms. The agreement could be officially announced during a high-level summit between India’s Prime Minister and the U.S. President in the coming weeks.

Analysts believe the renewed U.S. interest in strengthening trade ties with India stems from growing competition with China, particularly in the agricultural and manufacturing supply chains. Despite the optimism, discussions over sensitive sectors such as dairy, digital commerce, and intellectual property remain ongoing.

Experts suggest that domestic political considerations in both nations could influence the final shape of the agreement, but the move is widely viewed as a significant step toward reinforcing strategic and economic cooperation between the two largest democracies in the world.
