Visakhapatnam, India — Google has unveiled plans to invest $15 billion over the next five years to establish its first artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This marks the company’s largest AI investment outside the United States, underscoring India’s growing prominence in the global tech landscape.
The facility will feature gigawatt-scale data centers, powered predominantly by renewable energy sources, and will include the construction of a new international subsea cable gateway to enhance global connectivity. The project is expected to generate approximately 188,000 jobs, contributing significantly to the local economy.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted the strategic importance of this investment, noting that Visakhapatnam’s coastal location and existing infrastructure make it an ideal site for the hub. “This investment represents a significant step in our commitment to advancing AI technology and supporting India’s digital transformation,” Pichai stated during a recent conversation with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff at Dreamforce.
The initiative has received support from the Indian government and is being developed in partnership with the Adani Group. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the project, emphasizing its potential to democratize technology and bolster India’s position in the global AI ecosystem.
