On October 14, New York City witnessed the sixth annual Eucharistic procession arranged by the Napa Institute. Despite heavy rains the previous day, organizers say the weather held off, allowing an estimated 2,000 faithful to participate during the 5 p.m. rush in Times Square.
The event began at St. Patrick’s Cathedral with a Holy Hour and Mass. Cardinal Seán O’Malley presided over the liturgy and delivered the homily before the procession began. Among the speakers was Cardinal Giorgio Marengo, who shared a story about a theft of the Eucharist in Mongolia to emphasize its sacredness.
Actor Jonathan Roumie, known for portraying Jesus in The Chosen, addressed the crowd too, referencing St. Carlo Acutis’ view that “the Eucharist is my highway to heaven.” Roumie reflected on how participating in the Eucharist sustained him during the filming of the series.
Father Ambrose Criste also spoke, urging the crowd to reflect on spiritual poverty in contrast to material wealth. After the procession wound through Times Square and Fifth Avenue, it concluded back at the cathedral with a benediction.
