India to Form a Central Transport Authority to Repair Infrastructure Gaps

The Indian government is preparing to set up a Central Transport Planning Authority aimed at fixing inefficiencies in the country’s infrastructure system. The new body will focus on integrating planning across sectors like railways, roads, aviation, shipping, and urban transport to reduce duplication and accelerate project completion.

Currently, each transport ministry operates independently, which often leads to overlapping projects and underused facilities such as airports and metro lines. The proposed authority will ensure that infrastructure projects are developed based on actual demand and long-term sustainability.

Officials suggest the new authority will operate under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister’s Office, giving it the power to coordinate effectively across departments and state governments. The move is expected to improve transparency, reduce delays, and optimize the use of public funds.

Cabinet approval for the proposal is expected within the next few months. Once implemented, this unified planning body could transform how India designs, funds, and manages its national infrastructure projects—supporting faster economic growth and improved connectivity.
