The White House has criticized the Nobel Committee for prioritizing politics over peace after the Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan pro-democracy activist María Corina Machado instead of former US President Donald Trump.
The Committee recognized Machado for her persistent efforts in promoting democratic rights for Venezuelans. Trump, who has long expressed his desire for the Nobel Prize and often cited his role in resolving global conflicts, congratulated Machado personally, acknowledging her achievements.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung stated that the Nobel Committee “placed politics over peace” and praised Trump’s ongoing efforts to broker peace deals, prevent wars, and save lives. Trump has been credited with facilitating a multi-stage ceasefire in Gaza shortly before the prize announcement and claims to have resolved multiple global conflicts during his terms.
Despite international support, including from leaders like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump faced procedural challenges this year. Nobel nominations closed on January 31, just days after he assumed office, and the Committee finalizes its selections months later.
Machado dedicated her award to the people of Venezuela and acknowledged Trump for his support, a message Trump shared on social media. While the Gaza ceasefire marks a notable development, conflicts such as Russia’s war with Ukraine continue, highlighting the complexity of awarding the Peace Prize based on recent achievements.
The Nobel Peace Prize recognizes contributions to democracy, human rights, arms control, disarmament, and peace negotiations. Trump’s domestic policies, including immigration enforcement and the use of National Guard troops for public safety, have drawn criticism, complicating his candidacy. Historically, four US presidents have received the Nobel Peace Prize, with Barack Obama being the only one awarded while still in office.
