Washington, D.C. – A bipartisan group of 21 U.S. lawmakers has called on President Donald Trump to take immediate steps to repair relations with India and roll back recent tariff increases on Indian imports. The group, led by Representatives Deborah Ross and Ro Khanna, stressed that escalating trade tensions are harming both nations’ economies.
In a letter to the White House, the lawmakers highlighted that the tariff hikes, some as high as 50%, have negatively impacted Indian manufacturers while raising costs for American consumers. They also warned that the strained trade relationship could push India closer to countries like China and Russia, posing potential geopolitical risks.
The lawmakers emphasized India’s strategic importance as a partner in the Indo-Pacific and its role in the Quad alliance alongside the United States, Japan, and Australia. They urged the administration to reaffirm its commitment to strengthening U.S.-India ties through dialogue and policy review.
The letter underscores bipartisan concern over the potential long-term consequences of trade disputes, urging swift action to prevent further economic and diplomatic fallout.
