California Declares Diwali a Statewide Holiday Beginning 2026

California has officially recognized Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, as a statewide holiday, marking a historic milestone for cultural inclusivity. With this move, California becomes the third U.S. state to grant official recognition to Diwali.

Governor Gavin Newsom approved Assembly Bill 268, which will take effect on January 1, 2026. The new law allows public schools and community colleges to close on Diwali, and state employees can take the day off to celebrate.

The bill acknowledges that Diwali is celebrated not only by Hindus but also by Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, reflecting California’s multicultural identity and commitment to inclusiveness.

Lawmakers Ash Kalra and Darshana Patel, who co-authored the legislation, emphasized that this step recognizes the growing South Asian community and its contributions to California’s social and cultural landscape. Kalra noted that recognizing Diwali as a state holiday allows families and children to embrace and share their heritage proudly.

Starting in 2026, California will join other states in honoring Diwali — a festival that symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance — reinforcing the state’s message of unity and cultural respect.
