Washington D.C. – The United States government has announced a $100,000 annual fee on employers applying for H-1B and L-1 visas, a move expected to significantly impact Indian professionals in the U.S. tech sector. The fee, effective immediately, adds to existing visa costs and aims to prioritize higher-wage foreign workers.
Lawmakers, including Senators Chuck Grassley and Dick Durbin, have proposed legislation to tighten visa regulations, raise wage requirements, and limit eligibility for certain organizations. Senator Tom Cotton also suggested restricting foreign hires at universities and non-profits.
India, the largest source of H-1B visa holders, may see a slowdown in employment opportunities for its tech professionals, as U.S. companies adjust hiring practices to accommodate the new fee structure. Tech industry leaders have voiced concerns over potential disruptions to workforce planning and recruitment.
