In a significant development in New York City’s 2025 mayoral race, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams has announced the suspension of his reelection campaign. Citing a dismissed federal corruption case, persistent media scrutiny, and challenges in fundraising, Adams acknowledged that he was no longer a credible contender. Despite his exit, Adams will remain on the ballot due to missed withdrawal deadlines.
This move narrows the field to three main candidates: Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani, a 33-year-old state lawmaker and self-described democratic socialist, emerged as the frontrunner after defeating Cuomo in the primary. Cuomo, however, contends that the race is now a direct contest between him and Mamdani.
President Donald Trump has also inserted himself into the race, threatening to withhold federal funds from the city if Mamdani wins and portraying Cuomo as the more favorable alternative—a stance Cuomo has echoed.
Curtis Sliwa, known for founding the Guardian Angels, remains steadfast in his campaign, despite pressure to clear the field for Cuomo. Sliwa maintains his commitment to the race, asserting his consistency and readiness to serve.
Adams will complete his mayoral term, but his future beyond office remains uncertain. His departure has undeniably reshaped the dynamics of the upcoming election, leaving voters to navigate a complex political landscape.
