In the 2025 Stanford/Elsevier global ranking of scientists, 6,239 faculty members from Indian institutions have been recognized among the top 2% worldwide. The ranking, which assesses researchers on citation metrics, includes both “single-year” and “career-long” performance.
When it comes to institutional representation, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) contributed the largest share, with 755 faculty making it into the single-year list. Following them are over 330 professors from National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and 117 researchers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
In the medical sector, AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) accounted for 80 faculty members, of which 56 are from AIIMS New Delhi.
Other institutions that made a mark include:
- IIT (BHU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU)—with 46 and 44 faculty members respectively
- Panjab University, which had 28 of its professors in the career-long rankings
This recognition underlines the depth and diversity of Indian scholarly output across engineering, science, medicine, and interdisciplinary research.
