Veteran actor Mohanlal has been selected to receive the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2023, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting announced recently. The award will be conferred during the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on September 23, 2025. The appointment followed a recommendation from the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent his congratulations, noting that Mohanlal embodies excellence and versatility. He praised the actor for his extensive body of work over many years, especially his contributions to Malayalam cinema and theater. Modi also highlighted Mohanlal’s acclaimed roles in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi films and emphasized how his performances across different mediums continue to inspire.
With a career spanning more than forty years, Mohanlal has appeared in over 350 films across five languages. He has successfully balanced commercial blockbusters with critically acclaimed art-films, earning his place as one of India’s most honored cinema figures. In addition to his two National Film Awards for Best Actor, Mohanlal has been awarded both the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. His achievements as an actor, producer, and director are seen as having made a lasting impact on Indian cinema.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s highest honour in film, given annually by the Government to recognize lifetime achievement in the cinematic arts.
