DC South Asian Film Festival 2025 Ends with Packed Screenings, Powerful Films & Classic Restorations

The 14th edition of the DC South Asian Film Festival was held from September 5 to 7 in Rockville, Maryland, showcasing a vibrant lineup of 54 films from 12 countries and spanning 14 languages. Throughout the festival, audiences were treated to powerful storytelling, masterclasses, and dialogues that celebrated both tradition and contemporary issues.

The festival kicked off with the film Main Actor Nahin Hoon, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Chitrangada Satarupa, followed by a discussion featuring the director Aditya Kripalani and lead actress Chitrangada Satarupa. On the closing night, Pyre was screened—a film that poignantly portrays the emotional journey of an elderly couple coping with isolation after their child moves away.

A restored 4K version of the classic Manthan by Shyam Benegal was also presented, giving newer audiences a chance to experience the landmark film in updated clarity. Alongside these screenings, masterclasses were conducted by notable directors, including Hariharan and Reshmi Mitra, who shared insights on independent filmmaking, narrative design, and cross-cultural cinema.

The event drew robust attendance: nearly every show was packed, many scenes received standing ovations, and filmmakers and guests praised the energy, organization, and the sense of connection among creators and viewers. Festival organizers highlighted the growing recognition of South Asian diaspora cinema in the Washington, D.C. region and reaffirmed their commitment to amplify underrepresented voices in film.
